Swim for a Cause – Thank you!

In an independent fundraising event, teams of Melville LeisureFit staff and Swim Club members swam 82.6 kms in a non-stop 12-hour relay, and raised over $2,400 for DDWA!

A tremendous THANK YOU to all those who participated in “SWIM FOR A CAUSE”, a 12-hour non-stop swim relay challenge to help raise funds for DDWA, held on 22nd April at Melville LeisureFit. This event was a great success, with teams swimming 82.6km (that is equivalent to swimming to Rottnest and back, twice!) and raising over $2,400 for DDWA including donations from the GoFundMe page and event day donation box funds.

We want to give a special shoutout to the event organisers, Anna Duan and James Maddeford, whose hard work made this event happen. Anna and James’ dedication and passion for our cause are truly inspiring, and we are grateful for their efforts.

When we asked what inspired the event, Anna and James said:

“As swim instructors, we both work with a lot of swimmers who have developmental and intellectual disabilities at our swim school. It always brings us such joy to see them enjoy and flourish in their swimming lessons, which inspired us to do something to help raise awareness for these ‘hidden disabilities’. We chose to support DDWA as we love the support and hands-on work you do to help people with a disability, providing them with equal opportunities to succeed.”

They were referring to the knowledge-building workshops and the free information resources DDWA provide to support people and families about developmental and intellectual disability, and complex needs. These resources are from the DDWA website “Knowledge Hub”.

To all the swimmers who took part in this challenge, we are also extremely grateful. Your commitment and enthusiasm were truly amazing, and we appreciate your support and effort.

We know that none of this would be possible without the support of our community, and we are humbled by the generosity and kindness of all those who donated to this cause.

Thank you once again for supporting us in this fundraiser. We look forward to your continued support in the future. In fact, you can make a donation to DDWA at any time HERE.

About the Event:

Held at Melville LeisureFit – Booragoon, the 12-hour Relay Swim was a fundraising event where teams (made up of LeisureFit staff and participating Club swimmers) swam non-stop for 12 hours in relay format. Inspired by those in their Flippa Swim School Support Needs program, they raised money for Developmental Disability WA (DDWA).
