Beginning in 2021, DDWA has received NDIS ILC funding to offer a Self Advocacy Program for people with intellectual disability in schools and community group homes.

The 8 hour course is delivered over 4 workshops, 2 hours per week, or can be delivered in 2 longer sessions.  Workshops are facilitated by DDWA along with a co-facilitator with intellectual disability.

We would like to share the resources we use in our workshops to support more people to have access to build their self advocacy skills.

Our Self Advocacy Program resources including a PowerPoint presentation and a workbook are now available for you to download for FREE.

If you would like more information about this program or how to use the resources, please contact Theresa or call DDWA on 9420 7203

Workshop Outcomes

yellow bubble with the following testimonials from people who did the workshop I loved the course; it was amazing. It gave me hope for the future. I talked about my feelings and what I want to do in the future.

Self Advocacy workshops support people with intellectual disability to:

  • become strong self-advocates and exercise their rights/responsibilities as human beings, citizens, community members and service users.
  • receive support to develop their skills i.e., Self-Expression, Self-Determination, Self-Reliance, Self-Confidence, Self-Development and Self-Esteem.
  • develop skills to enable them to have more of a say in their NDIS plan or take charge of their plan.
  • hear about real examples of how speaking up has helped other people to achieve the lifestyle of their choice.
  • develop skills/confidence to speak up when making choices and decisions or when setting goals for the future and generally having a say in their life.
  • develop the confidence to join peer groups, participate in community activities and join service user groups such as DDWA board advisory sub-committee.
