Transport Funding in NDIS Plans

When it comes to NDIS plans – you can get transport funding included once the person is a young adult.

Transport funding helps participants who can’t use public transport easily due to their

disability. Typically, transport can be included in a NDIS plan once the person is 16

years old. It can cover costs related to getting around – like around like your

SmartRider card, fuel, bus, train, and ferry fees – and improving community access.

You can get transport funding in your NDIS plan if you have difficulty using public

transport on your own because of your disability. Make sure to check with your Local

Area Coordinator (LAC), planner, or support coordinator to ensure you are funded at

the right level.

  • Level 1: Up to *$1,606 per year for participants who are not working, studying, or attending day programs but want to enhance their community access.
  • Level 2: Up to *$2,472 per year for participants who work or study part-time(up to 15 hours a week) or participate in day programs and other social activities.
  • Level 3: Up to *$3,456 per year for participants who work, study, or look for work for at least 15 hours a week and can’t use public transport because of their disability.

In some cases, if you have additional needs, you might receive more funding. You will need to provide evidence to NDIA for this to be approved.

If you choose to self-manage your transport funding, it can be paid directly into your

bank account every fortnight. This payment is automatic, so you don’t need to make

claims for it. Just make sure the NDIA has your bank details.

If your transport funding is agency managed, then the agency or provider will draw

down on your transport funding through the provider portal. You don’t claim for this.
