Are you involved in developing or implementing a DAIP for a government authority or not-for-profit community organisation?

Are you interested in learning how you can better consider the needs of people with communication disability in your DAIP?

Developmental Disability WA (DDWA) invites you to attend one of our Communication Disability Capacity Building Workshops.

Come along to understand:
⭐    What is a communication disability?
⭐    Who has a communication disability?
⭐    Is it only people who don’t use speech or use Auslan?
⭐    Do all people with intellectual disability also have a communication disability?
⭐    Do people with communication disability have an intellectual disability? What about people who lose their ability to talk due to a brain injury?
⭐    What access and inclusion supports should be considered within your DAIP
for people with a communication disability?
⭐    Who else may benefit when you improve communication access eg people with
English as a second language and people with poor literacy.
⭐    What practical strategies can you implement that will improve the way people with communication disability can access your public space, services, events and

PRESENTER – Laura Jones

This workshop will be led by Laura Jones, lecturer in complex communication to postgraduate teachers and therapists at Edith Cowan University, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with you.

The workshop will include people with lived experience of communication disability some of whom will be co-presenters. They will share how inclusive practices have made a positive difference in supporting their access to communication, participation and inclusion.

Note that these are live, in-person workshops held at City West Lotteries House. These are not online virtual workshops.

Location: Conference Room, City West Lotteries House, 2 Delhi Street, West Perth

Following the workshops, DDWA will provide some ongoing coaching and feedback to individual authorities or departments to assist them in developing their community access strategies during 2022/2023.

In 2023 we will be targeting our sessions to specific areas such as health, education, recreation as well as specific strategies including: Introductions to Easy Read texts, Easy to Understand information, Communication Accessible Videos.
