With the Australian summer well into swing, it’s time to gear up and get ready for whatever the weather might throw our way. At DDWA, we’ve just launched a brand-new webpage packed with easy-to-follow tips and resources designed especially for people with intellectual and developmental disability.
It’s designed in Easy Read format too!
This webpage helps you with tips on how to prep for those moments when the weather gets a little wild. We’re talking cyclones, storms, floods, and bushfires – situations that can get pretty intense, especially if you’re a bit unsure about what steps to take.
So, what’s a bad weather emergency? It’s when things outside with weather get dangerous, and you need to take action to keep safe. Whether it’s a howling storm or a fire on the horizon, this page is your go-to for staying one step ahead.
Who do you call when things get dangerous – or you’re scared about your safety?
Emergency services are there for you. Dial 000 if you’re hurt, scared, or see something alarming. If bad weather comes close to or affects your home space, reach out to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) at 133 337 or the State Emergency Services (SES) at 132 500.
What if you’re not sure what to do? That’s totally okay! Friends, family, and supporters are here for you. Make a list of phone numbers to call if you need a hand or just a friendly voice.
Knowing what to do ahead of time will help keep you safe. You’ve got options for staying informed! Talk to your loved ones, surf the internet, or tune in to your local radio station for updates. And check out the Emergency WA website. It’s a weather update for emergencies.
But our new webpage on Getting Ready for a Bad Weather Emergency includes something special and simple for ‘how to help you’: Easy Read books! These cover everything from preparing for cyclones, storms, floods, to bushfires. There’s even a video by DDWA people – Janny (project manager) and John (DDWAory Council member, a person with intellectual disability) showing how to put together an emergency kit – super handy for those moments when you might need to leave home in a hurry.
For the supporters out there, we’ve got you covered too! DFES offers free resources like the Bushfire Safety Guide for Caregivers and a Flood Smart Brochure. There’s something for everyone to ensure we’re all ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature sends our way.
Stay safe, stay informed, and remember, being prepared is the best thing to help you and your loved ones. With these tips and resources, you’re all set to face the weather.
