To provide recommendations to strengthen access and inclusion for students with disability DDWA Advisory Council members – a group of people with intellectual disability – are working with the WA Government to review of the School Education Act 1999.
DDWA Advisory Council is currently working on the review of the School Education Act 1999 in consultation with an expert panel appointed by the WA Cook Government. It has been over 25 years since this Act was written and it may not fully meet today’s understanding and community expectations of students with disability.
The review is asking experts, which includes our Advisory Council members, to provide recommendations for ways to improve access and inclusion for students with disability.
We strongly feel that schools who teach and value respect, diversity and differences are key to creating a society where everyone can participate and feel included.
In consultation with Professor Andrew Whitehouse (chair of the expert panel) and Louise Looby (manager of the project) the DDWA Advisory Council is providing essential insights to identify barriers and opportunities for change within the School Education Act. This work is an excellent way for our Advisory Council to contribute their insights in guiding the review with lived experience as well as their advocacy expertise.
