Canada Study Tour Presentation:

May 2018

Side By Side is a growing community of families who support people with developmental disability who can at times behave in challenging ways.

In 2017 a group of Side By Side parents and WAIS team members had the opportunity to visit Canada and learn more about how people with disability are being supported to be included in their local communities.

This tour built on strong relationships that started over 10 years ago with family led organisations such as Inclusion Alberta, Family Support Institute and Vela Microboards.

Inclusion Alberta’s focus is to advocate on behalf of children and adults with developmental disability and their families.  Together, they share the dream of meaningful family life and community inclusion.

As an advocacy organisation, they support families and individuals in their desire to be fully included in community life.

It was an amazing opportunity and we want to share lessons learnt and our hopes for a more inclusive future with families, service providers and others.

Please view the presentation to share our discoveries about:

  • What is inclusion?
  • Inclusive education and post secondary inclusive education
  • Employment opportunities and partnerships
  • Self Managed Resource Centres
  • Family leadership
  • Family Resource Partners
  • Microboards
