What does the Advisory Council do?
The job of people on the DDWA Advisory Council is to:
- Speak up about things that are happening at DDWA and in the community
- Tell the DDWA board and staff about important things that affect people with developmental disability
- Work with DDWA staff to help make DDWA better for everyone
- Be involved in decision making at DDWA
- Talk about problems or important issues in the community and government that affect DDWA members.
How did the Advisory Council Start?
-
DDWA want to include people with disability in all the work we do.
-
To help do this we started an Advisory Council in 2021.
-
This is a group of people with intellectual disability who give us advice.
-
Eight people joined. They got Easy Read guides to help them understand their job.
-
The Council talks about what people with disability need and want.
-
Their ideas help DDWA make better services, training, and support.
-
Michelle Silver is the current leader (since 2023). Before her, John Hines was leader (2021–2023).
-
The Council has met with important people, like the Minister for Disability Services, and they made a list of important issues for people with disability.
-
Every year at the DDWA Annual Meeting, the Council tells everyone about their work.
-
Other groups or organisations can ask the Council for advice. A popular service is helping make Easy Read documents, so information is simple and clear.
